Abstract

The paper analyses John Stuart MilTs equity principle of equal sacrifice. The utility-of-income functions of a sample of fictitious taxpayers are evaluated. These functions are confronted with existing income tax schedules. A general result is that sacrifice (absolute and proportional) is unequal for different tax brackets.
