Abstract

The quintic nonlinearity is important in the study of the nonlinearinteraction between Langmuir waves and electrons in plasma. Using thepseudoenergy approach, five types of solitary wave solution areobtained explicitly. Only one of these is the modification of the solitonof the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation and can be treatedperturbatively. However, other four types of solitary wave solution areall induced by the quintic nonlinearity and cannot be treatedperturbatively from the solutions of the cubic nonlinear Schrödingerequation.
