Abstract
Quintet states in atomic and ionic systems are fascinating and are rare and elusive to optical studies. This brief communication reviews our observation of specific quintet states in the N+, O2+ and Ar4+ systems via electron-capture processes in high-resolution translational energy spectroscopy. In particular, the metastable [3s3p3 5S0] state of Ar4+, which is not listed in comprehensive spectroscopic tables, has been identified and located at an energy of 7.7 eV above the 3P ground state.
