Abstract

1. 1. Juglone reductase activity was observed in various tissues of the larva of the fall armyworm [ Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith)] with midgut microsomes being the most active. Optimum conditions for assaying the enzyme were established. 2. 2. Allelochemicals such as α-pinene, peppermint oil, flavone, indole 3-acetonitrile and indole 3-carbinol were found to induce the reductase. 3. 3. The enzyme was also active in corn earworms, tobacco budworms and velvetbean caterpillars.
