Abstract

AbstractQuinine remains an uncommon but potentially lethal cause of poisoning. It is only available by prescription but is commonly prescribed for the treatment of muscle cramps. Permanent visual disturbance and life threatening cardiac dysrhythmias may occur. A case which illustrates the wide range and severity of symptoms is presented. The management of quinine poisoning includes regular activated charcoal and supportive measures. Parenteral sodium bicarbonate may be useful for cardiac toxicity.
