Abstract

The American patchwork quilt is an object of material culture that exhibits unique geographic dimensions. Because of the diffusion of patterns and styles and the use of specific fabrics in different colonial settlements, quilts are important indicators of folk cultures. One unique folk culture in North America is the Amish, known for their strict adherence to traditional religious beliefs and plain lifestyle. Amish women have developed a set of patterns that reflect their plain and simple lifestyle and have created a unique subset of American quilts. By integrating a study of these quilts into a unit on folk cultures, students can gain insights into the role of customs and beliefs in the shaping of objects of material culture.
