Abstract
According to Tinto's (1993) theory of student departure model or Astin's (1984) theory of involvement, integration and involvement in the university community are key elements to student retention. A pilot orientation program/learning community, Quests was started during the summer of 2008 as a means of increasing revenue at Wayne State University's recreation center. However, with the support of the College of Education, and collaborative efforts of faculty members from the Department of Communication, the College of Education, and the staff of the recreation center, Quests was focused to become an alternative orientation/learning community experience for incoming freshman students at the urban institution.
