Abstract

As we have seen, obedience was a key to religious life and for everyone a key to eternal life as well. It was a supportive structure of society, the stonework in the walls of a monastery that kept vices out and virtues in. Obedience was also the pillar upon which secular rulers built their power; if it crumbled, there would be little left to rule. Next, the focus will be momentarily shifted from inside a religious house to obedience in political thinking and everyday politics. This will be done in order to illuminate the structures of power dominating the political and religious scene during the reign of Henry VIII in relation to the monastic question.KeywordsReligious LifeEternal LifeReligious IdeaDivine PowerHenry VIIIThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
