Abstract

Abstract Quercus calliprinos Webb and Quercus coccifera L.: researches on the leaf anatomy and taxonomical and chorological considerations.—In order to contribute to a systematic explanation of all forms attributed to contribute to a systematic explanation of all forms attributed to Kermes Oak, we have carried out a morphological and anatomic-micrometrical study on leaves of samples taken from different localities of its area. The characters observed in the samples permit us to distinguish two entities; one is located in Israel and is referred to Quercus calliprinos Webb, the other is located in France and is referred to Quercus coccifera L. In some localities such as Apulia and Sicily, the two entities coexist; while in other localities the above differential characters of the samples appear oscillating; in this case it is not possible to attribute them to either entity. In all cases and above all in the most doubtful ones, we think that, in order to obtain a reliable systematic reference, the differential morphological characters, previously considered by the other authors, should be supported by anatomical-micrometrical characters which we have pointed out in this work.
