Abstract

Abstract The stages of reef formation are outlined on the basis of observations on Miocene reefs of the western Mediterranean basin. At a depth of about 100 meters there is a zone in which reef and nonreef facies can coexist. The paleoecologic conditions of a given stratigraphic horizon can be reconstructed from detailed analysis of reef and subreef layers.
