Abstract

The objective of this article is to look into the characteristics of the Chilenization process in the Pica Oasis by addressing one of the least studied actors in this context: the priests. Focussing on the work and ideas of the priest Luis Friedrich, we worked with the writings sent to his superior authority between 1903 and 1907.Through this documentation not only the work of Friedrich dedicated to promote the endogenous characteristics existing in the traditional modalities of religious and secular organization of the rural people from Pica, Matilla and the valley of Quisma to deal with the domineering ups and downs of the chilenization is described, but also his political approach regarding the prejudiced point of view in which the Chilean state administration supported the exercise of its political and administrative sovereignty.
