Abstract
In various ways, masculinity has long been at the center of queer theory. This chapter traces the rise of queer theory alongside the rise of critical studies of men and masculinities. It argues that queer theory is an important intervention in the field because it allows scholars to complicate ideas of masculinity and to think through the unspoken, the unsaid, the non-normative. Additionally, this chapter considers queer theory’s engagement with method and methodology. Ultimately, queer theory is an important and theoretically rich way to explore the complexities of men and masculinities.
