Abstract

Introduction: During the cycle of life people are exposed to various situations that can lead to loss of autonomy and independence, and the accidental fall and joint aches factors that prevent this autonomy. Objective: To assess the risk of falls in an older group who had knee pain. Materials and Methods: Retrospective quantitative study of elderly women from a group of seniors from Passo Fundo-rs gathering was held in August and September 2009, were part of the sample 67 subjects were females aged over 60 years . The instrument used for data collection was the Scale for Assessment of Risk of Falls Dowton and variables involve the presence of previous falls, medications, hearing impairment, visual, gait. Results: Of the sample of 67 (100%) patients were female, 31 (46.27%) have joint pain, and of these 19 (61.3%) are at risk of falls. Elderly women with joint pain 16 (51.61%) fall in the age group 60-69 years, 16 of these (100%) perform physical activities. Already in the age group of 70-79 years, found 13 (41.93%) patients, of these 12 (92.3%) perform physical activities. Conclusion: Based on the analysis of results it was concluded that the elderly who suffer from pain in the knee joint are the ones with higher risk of falls and were aged from 60 to 69 years.
