Abstract

For some time Quebec, the French-speaking underdeveloped province of Eastern Canada, has begun to make itself heard in the newspapers of the whole world. What is going on in Quebec? A revolution? Bombs burst last year in Montreal. A hundred thousand farmers marched on the Quebec parliament in the spring. Students and unions also marched on the Quebec capital. The Prime Minister, Jean Lesage, head of the Quebec provincial government, sent off several ultimatums to the government in Ottawa; and he recently warned the Anglo-Canadians in the rest of Canada that special status will soon have to be accorded to Quebec or, according to him, the political situation there might take a serious turn. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website.
