Abstract
A survey of North American Quaternary workers shows that a majority of those polled believe the distinction between the geologic-climate stratigraphic term “Wisconsin Glaciation” and the chrono-stratigraphic term “Wisconsinan Stage” is important in North America. More than two-thirds of the respondents indicated that they favor use of local or regional geographic terms for the last glaciation outside of central and eastern North America. A majority also advocated informal use of local or regional names for subdivisional stratigraphic units. Almost three-fourths of the respondents suggested that the Pleistocene-Holocene boundary be placed at 10,000 14 C yr B.P. Most feel that the pre-Wisconsin glacial stage terminology should be retained, but in a revised, well-dated stratigraphic system.
