Abstract

19F and 119Sn variable temperature NMR studies have been carried out on toluene solutions of two quaternary ammonium tributyldifluorostannates, {Bu 4}{Bu 3SnF 2} and {(C 6H 5CH 2)Me 2NC 14H 29}{Bu 3SnF 2}. They show in both cases the presence of two distinct tributyltin species in equilibrium, the trans-{Bu 3SnF 3} − and trans-{(Bu 3SnF) 2} − and trans{(Bu 3SnF 2F} − anions. The latter is believed to be a novel type of species. The effect of substituting F by Cl was investigated by a 119Sn NMR study of two analogous compounds, {(C 6H 5CH 2)Me 2NC 14H 29}{Bu 3SnFlF} and {(C 6H 5CH 2)Me 2NC 14H 29}{Bu 3SnCl 2}. The 119mSn Mössbauer data for the above compounds are also presented and discussed.
