Quaternary Aged Vertebrate (Mammals) Fossil Findings from Denizli Basin and their Significance
Highlights
The Denizli Basin is located in the Western Anatolia and it includes early-middle Miocene-Quaternary terrestrial sediments
Several mammal fossil localities were found in these terrestrial sediments
Small-large mammal fossils from Quaternary period are considersbly rich in terms of genus and species and they are mostly the first findings in Anatolia
Summary
Türkiye’de Kuvaterner dönemi küçük memeli lokaliteleri neredeyse hiç çalışılmamıştır. Gökpınar lokalitesinde bulunan ve Anadolu’da Kuvaterner döneminde bulunan ilk fosiller olan Spalacidae fosileri, Spalax denizliensis yeni türü olarak tanımlanmıştır [13]. Anadolu da ve kıta Avrupa’sında daha önce hiç fosil kaydı bulunmayan bu cinse ait ilk fosil kayıtları, ilk defa Denizli Havzası’nda bulunmuş ve yeni bir tür olarak tanımlanmıştır [6]. Erten [7] yaptığı çalışmada, Gökpınar lokalitesinde, üst birinci azı dişinde görülen ‘neoenterostyle’ özelliği ile bilinen tüm Muridae ailesinin cinslerinden farklılık gösteren fosiller bulmuş ve Extrarius orhuni (yeni cins yeni tür) olarak tanımlanmıştır (Şekil 4). Günümüzde yaşayan tek cins olan ve yaklaşık 15 yaşayan türü bulunan Spalax cinsine ait fosil bulgusu ise Anadolu da yoktur ve sadece Ukrayna da bir lokalitede [12] tanımlanmış tek bir tür ile temsil edilir.
