Abstract

The results of experimental observations select two regions in the magnetospheric turbulent wake: plasma sheet and low latitude boundary layer (LLBL). Large-scale properties of LLBL are analyzed taking into account regular and turbulent plasma transport in Y direction and the high level of the observed turbulence. The application of the developed approach to the problem of the boundary layer formation gives the possibility to suggest the qualitative explanation of LLBL thickness during southward and northward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) orientations and the dawn–dusk LLBL asymmetry.
