Abstract

Quasi-phasematched (QPM) frequency conversion in waveguides has been been widely studied in recent years as a means for efficient generation of coherent radiation. Second harmonic, sum, and difference frequency generation, as well as optical parametric amplification and oscillation have been demonstrated at a number of laboratories. In the best developed materials systems, periodically-poled ferroelectrics with ion-exchanged waveguides, wavelengths from the ultraviolet (<370 nm) to the mid-infrared (4 μm) have been generated with near-infrared pump lasers. Efficiencies exceeding 1000%/W-cm2, and CW output power in the blue exceeding 20 mW have been generated.
