Abstract

The quasi-elastic Raman scattering in SiO2 and PS glasses is analyzed inthe framework of the model of a damped oscillator. The model ascribes thequasi-elastic contribution to the scattering of light on damped vibrationswhich have a quasi-elastic part in their response function. With additionalassumption that the vibrations around the boson peak are damped by the sameprocess as the acoustic waves, a good agreement is obtained between acousticattenuation data and QES spectra in SiO2 and polystyrene both on a qualitativeand a quantitative level.
