Abstract

Rocketsonde data provide estimates of quasi-biennial, annual, and semiannual zonal wind and temperature harmonic amplitudes and phases in tropical and extratropical latitudes in the stratosphere and low mesosphere (up to 60 km). The quasi-biennial zonal wind amplitude is a maximum (exceeding 14 m sec−1) at heights near 30 km in tropical latitudes, the annual amplitude is a maximum (exceeding 70 m sec−1) at heights above 60 km in temperate latitudes, and the semiannual amplitude is a maximum (exceeding 24 m sec−1) near the stratopause in tropical latitudes. The quasi-biennial, annual, and semiannual temperature amplitudes are all maximum in polar latitudes: the quasi-biennial temperature amplitude exceeding 2.5°C at heights near 35 km, the annual amplitude exceeding 18°C at heights near 40 km, and the semiannual amplitude exceeding 4°C above the stratopause. Quasi-biennial zonal wind and temperature oscillations are apparent at all latitudes and to heights of 60 km and have a basic out-of-phase relation between polar and tropical latitudes.
