Abstract

This paper presents a study on the load-compression and energy absorption characteristics of a laterally simple crushed hexagonal ring. Two cases are considered: crushed across faces and comers. The initial part in the load-displacement trace shows a linear elastic characteristic followed by a non-linear elastic-plastic regime before collapse. The collapse load in ring compressed across faces is higher than that compressed across comer by factor of 1.8 for all cases. A simple but elegant analysis is also carried out. Experimental observations are compared with simple theoretical analyses as well as Finite Element formulation and good agreements are seen.
