Abstract

The heat capacity of (C 5H 5NH)MnCl 3 (PMCA) and (C 5H 5NH)NiCl 3 (PNCA) has been measured for 1.5 K < T < 50 K. Three-dimensional ordering is observed at T = 2.315 K for PMCA and T = 1.710 K for PNCA. Both compounds display highly 1 d magnetic behavior. For PMCA an intrachain interaction J/ k = -6.5 K is found; for PNCA J/ k = 3.5 K, combined with an easy-plane single-ion anisotropy D/ k = -10 K.
