Abstract

An undulator is a periodic magnetic structure which can produce quasi-monochromatic synchrotron radiation from relativistic particles. For a weak undulator field the transverse motion of the particles is not relativistic and the radiation can be calculated by going into a moving frame. The spectrum consists of one line with its width depending on the solid angle of the accepted radiation. The strong field case is more complicated and is only treated qualitatively. In this case the spectrum consists of many lines. The angular spread of the particles in the beam produces a broadening of the lines. Storage rings can have the beam qualities necessary to obtain narrow lines.
