Abstract

We have investigated the P 2p photoabsorption of a D 3h symmetry molecule PF 5 using angle-resolved ion yield spectroscopy and analyzed it with the help of first-principles calculations within the framework of the DV-Xα method. Nearly isotropic ionic fragmentation is observed irrespective of the symmetries of the excited states and interpreted using a model in which two axial P–F bonds and three equatorial P–F bonds are assumed to have roughly the same rupture probabilities via P 2p Auger decay.
