Abstract

We present a configurational coordinate model to explain a number of optical bleaching features displayed by the ultraviolet mid-temperature thermoluminescence peaks (110 °C, 160 °C and 220 °C) in quartz. Within our analysis, we find that the defect pair model for quartz luminescence needs to be extended to include a thermally-assisted optical stimulation path for each of the peaks. By incorporating this extension within an appropriate configurational coordinate framework, we have been able to develop an analytical explanation for known optical bleaching characteristics.
