Abstract

Abstract : This quarterly report provides a summary of support provided by the Institute for Advanced Technology (IAT) at The University of Texas at Austin (UT) to the Office of Naval Research (ONR) on the development of high-power superconducting homopolar motors for ship propulsion. One of the major issues facing the development of such machines for ship propulsion is the lifetime of the brushes used to transfer power from the homopolar motor rotor to the stator. Significant loss and wear polarity differences have been observed during the testing of such brushes, and ONR is developing a fundamental science program to address these issues. During this quarter, representatives from the IAT assisted ONR with the evaluation of proposals from a wide range of organizations that suggested approaches to identify and resolve the scientific reasons for the polarity differences.
