Abstract

Iris recognition system provides automatic identification of an individual based on a unique feature that located inside the iris. Iris recognition becomes one of the most accurate and secure biometric methods that used today. However, the execution time of the iris recognition algorithm on general purpose sequential system such as central processing units is too high so it can't work in the real time application. In this paper, we make two enhancements for the iris recognition system to speed up the execution time and make the opportunity to work in real time application. The first enhancement is make the iris recognition code work in parallel structure by implement and designed two portion of iris recognition which they are creation of iris template and matched among iris template on Field Programmable Gate Area (FPGA). Ridge Energy Detection (RED) algorithm is used to create the iris template which consider as one of the most accurate identification method to detect the iris features used today, also Hamming Distance (HD) is used to match between iris templates. The second enhancement is by choosing small size of the iris region that contain sufficient feature to distinguish between people. The two enhancement help to improve the time execution and the performance of the system.
