Abstract

We have explored the possibility that the observed fermion mass ratios arise purely because of renormalization effects, and that in the extended GUTs which unify the families non-trivially, these ratios evolve differently and in the correct direction. The analysis indicates that it is sometimes premature to try to rule out some GUTs which do not contain family unification, because of their wrong predictions for some mass ratios.
