Abstract

The possibility of dynamical generation of quark masses in quantum chromodynamics has been studied by means of renormalization group equations. Although we confine ourselves to QCD the quark-gluon system must be prepared to accommodate electroweak interactions in the next stage by satisfying a certain set of conservation laws defining chiral symmetry. In the absence of Higgs fields the requirement of chiral symmetry leads to a set of constraints to determine the quark mass ratios as well as the gauge coupling constant with the help of renormalization group
