Abstract

We present the physical basis for J/ψ suppression as a signal for quark deconfinement, investigate the relation between colour screening and the binding of heavy quarks, and discuss the momentum dependence of the effect. The results of these considerations are then compared to the presently available experimental results from heavy ion collisions at CERN.
