Abstract The sensitivity of the ('neutron' star mass, gravitational redshift) relation to the composition of the underlying matter is shown. Detection of X-ray or gamma-ray lines from binary X-ray sources offers the best hope of determining whether matter at supernuclear densities behaves as neutrons, quarks, or some other state of matter.
