Abstract

In general relativity, there are stable, finite-energy solutions which act like non-singular solitons in physically relevant regions. We propose to generalize the definition of solitons to curved spacetimes so that it includes such configurations. Of all known solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell system, only extreme black holes with magnetic charge satisfy these conditions. In particular, all solutions with zero electromagnetic field are excluded. The assumption that the hole solitons exist in nature has an interesting consequences: the electric charge becomes quantized and the roughly estimated value of the quantum lies near to the observed one. Analogous solitons exist in all Einstein-Yang-Mills systems.
