Abstract

An effective spin Hamiltonian is presented which describes thelow-lying energy spectrum of antiferromagnetic molecular rings withhigh accuracy. It will be shown that for the particular case of theferric wheels, quantum coherent phenomena are best discussed in termsof resonant quantum tunneling of the spin vector between differentrotational modes. These quantum processes are associated toanticrossings of higher-lying spin multiplets with ΔS = 2.
