Abstract
The ground-state properties of small metal particles are investigated with the use of the local density approximation applied to the spherical jellium background model. The Kohn-sham equations are solved exactly. Large quantum size effects are obtained for the work function in strict analogy to those obtained for thin metal films. Based on the calculated properties of the ground state, the static susceptibility and polarizability are determined within the frame of the RPA with exchange and correlation. Finally, the dynamical response of a small metal particle is studied.
