Abstract
The response of small metallic spheres to an electromagnetic field has been calculated to all multipole orders in the electronic excitations. Quantum-size effects have been analysed and found important for spheres with radii less than 10 AA, where large absorption peaks are associated with electron-hole-pair excitation energies.
