Abstract

Abstract In this paper we give a derivation of an earlier heuristic formula for partition 1/ƒ noise in pentodes and show that it is of a quantum 1/ƒ noise origin. First some guidelines are deduced from white noise sources in pentodes that carry over to 1/ƒ noise processes. First, Handel's cathode quantum 1/ƒ noise formula is stated for space-charge-limited diodes and then it is immediately applied to triodes. The triode result leads to the cathode quantum 1/ƒ noise contribution to the spectra S I a (ƒ), S I 2 (ƒ) and S I a , I 2 (ƒ) in pentodes when it is taken into account that the screen grid and anode components of this noise source are fully and positively correlated. Then the quantum partition 1/ƒ noise contributions to S I a (ƒ), S I 2 (ƒ) and S I a , I 2 (ƒ) are taken into account and it is born in mind that they are fully and negatively correlated. If it is then assumed that in the non-space-charge-limited pentode S I a , I a (ƒ) is zero, this leads immediately to the heuristic formula.
