Abstract

This paper qualitatively and quantitatively develops a theory which allows the calculation of the widths and shifts of the two photon Doppler free transitions from the ground states of alkali atoms to Rydberg n2S and n2D states. The widths and shifts result from collisions between Rydberg atoms and ground state alkali atoms, either of the same of other species. Impact theory calculations of the broadening and shift calculations applied to K**(nS)−K, K**(nS)−Rb, Rb**(nS)−Rb, Rb**(nS)−K show substantial agreement with experiment.
