Abstract
The purpose of this NATO Advanced Study Institute on Alloy Phase Stability is to clarify and enhance our understanding of the mechanisms responsible for phase formation and stability in metallic alloys. In these lectures I will address the particular problem of phase stability at absolute zero, discussing the microscopic origin of the heat of formation and structural stability of binary and ternary alloys. These lectures are given in parallel to C. T. Liu’s on “Phase Stability and design of ordered intermetallic alloys”. The overall title of my three lectures “Quantum Mechanics in Alloy Design” reflects C. T. Liu’s influence on and encouragement of quantum theorists to become directly involved in materials design.
