Abstract

Optical heterodyne receivers employing point-contact diode detectors consistently fail to achieve the high sensitivities previously predicted in the literature. Simple semiclassical analysis is presented, suggesting that quantum limitations impose a maximum sensitivity similar to that displayed by a conventional receiver using a photoconductive detector.
