Abstract

In earlier work we have succeeded in reducing the dynamics of self-localized modes (SLMs) in the Fermi–Pasta–Ulam (FPU) chain to that of a single quartic oscillator. This has been achieved by means of a specific unitary (or canonical) transformation. In this manner it has been possible to discuss the quantum aspects of the solitary mode by representing its quantal form as a quasi-coherent state of the quartic oscillator. In the present work we present another unitary transformation, now applied only to the effective quartic oscillator, by means of which an improved quasi-coherent state may be defined.
