Abstract

Abstract We show that in a ring-shaped Luttinger liquid (LL), weakly connected to an electron reservoir and capacitively coupled to a gate electrode, both the average ring charge Q and the persistent current I are step-like functions of the gate voltage at low temperatures. The step positions are determined by the LL parameter α=vF/s, which therefore can be measured. An additional measurement of the temperature dependence of Q or I gives a possibility to check the prediction of Luttinger liquid theory.
