Abstract

The AcrAB-TolC protein complex is a multidrug efflux pump found in Enterobacteriaceae such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella species and Klebsiella pneumoniae. It is the main representative of the Resistance-Nodulation-cell Division (RND) superfamily of bacterial efflux pumps, which is of high clinical interest since most multiple drug resistance (MDR) phenotypes occurring in Gram-negative bacteria are associated with the overexpression of these proteins. A high degree of resistance to antimicrobials is also a defining characteristic of bacterial biofilms, and the possible role of efflux pump expression in this phenomenon is still unclear.
