Abstract

A quantitative model for the distribution of a ternary system consisting of acid H χAn and symmetric salt MeAn in cellulose acetate membranes has been developed. The model is based on Donnan and dielectric exclusion phenomena. Membrane effective charge concentration variation as a function of pH and concentration of external solution, and ion solubility variation due to common anion phenomena have been taken into account. p]Theoretical aspects of the desorption phase in distribution coefficient determination are presented. p]Specific expressions for the HCl + NaCl and H s2SO 4 + NiSO 4 systems are derived from the general case. A satisfactory agreement between theoretical and experimental patterns of counter-ion and co-ion distribution coefficients as functions of asymmetric salt concentration is demonstrated.
