Abstract

The transfer of organisms during procedures used in nursing patients in an isolation unit have been studied using bacterial spores as tracers. The procedures used included washing hands, changing gloves, changing gowns or aprons; the contamination was in the form of blood smeared on surfaces or of sprayed spore suspensions. The results were compatible with those found in nurses tending patients shedding bacteria. The methods could be used to compare the numbers of organisms escaping from a room by the airborne route and by contact. It is suggested that the efficacy of nursing procedures should be expressed quantitatively, using these or similar data.
