Abstract

The plasma concentration of 2 immunoglobulins, IgG and IgM, were determined by the single radial diffusion method in a number of groups of clinically normal adult cattle. The mean plasma concentrations of IgG and IgM in samples from 100 British cows of various breeds were found to be 12·9 and 2·8 mg./ml. respectively. In some cases significant differences were found when mean values of breed samples were compared. The mean IgG concentration was also found to differ significantly in bull as compared to cow samples. Samples from a group of African cattle generally contained much higher concentrations of both immunoglobulins than those from European breeds. Both IgG and IgM were detected in colostrum and the single radial diffusion method was used to determine levels in 20 samples from Ayrshire cows. Mean colostral values of IgG and IgM were 34·1 and 4·9 mg./ml. respectively.
