Abstract

Summary In continuation of earlier works a series of 16 mono- and disubstituted 2-methyl-isothioureas was synthesized by S-methylation of corresponding thioureas. The compounds were isolated as hydroiodides and quantitatively tested for growth-inhibiting activity against autotrophic Chlorella vulgaris cultures under standardized test conditions. Isoeffective inhibitory values pc 50 1 ) determined from dosage-effectivity relations were used as activity parameters beside selected series of substituent constants for QSAR studies. In this way a simple linear relationship between pc 50 data and hydrophobic molecule parameters was obtained which allowes to predict biological activities of yet uninvestigated compounds possessing isothionrea structure. The results of this paper are discussed and compared with those found for corresponding thioureas.
