Abstract
Membrane filtration and emulsification by ultrasonic mixing or ultraturrax homogenization were evaluated for their efficacy to retrieve bacterial spores from edible oils. Membrane filtration of oils containing spores, with subsequent transfer of the membrane to culture media, allowed at most 18% recovery of the spores. Emulsification of the oils by ultrasonication or ultraturrax homogenization with surface active agents showed generally high spore retrieval.
