Abstract

Abstract A gas-liquid chromatographic method, using trimethyl silyl derivatives, is described for the quantitative determination of heroin in illicit samples in the presence of opium alkaloids such as morphine and monoacetylmorphine and common diluents such as lactose and procaine. Silylation of the illicit sample makes it possible to detect and identify some adulterants, namely, sugars such as lactose and mannitol, and procaine. The method provides a quick, accurate, and specific technique for determining heroin in illicit samples at concentrations over 5% with the optimum accuracy between 10 and 50%
