Abstract

Abstract Quantitative spectrofluorometry is employed to determine the degree of artificial coalification of exinites. Fluorescence spectra of thermally altered exinite (sporinites) vary systematically with increased temperatures of thermal alteration. The wavelength of the fluorescence maximum, A max shifts toward longer wavelength as a result of thermal alteration. These maxima shift from 560 nm in untreated lignite to 640 nm after the lignite was heated to 350°C. Numerical values, such as the fluorescence maximum, A max, and spectroquotient, Qs, can be used as rank parameters for coals.
